A story to read and remember
Once upon a time...
Texas Parent PAC was formed in 2005, and one of the first candidates the PAC endorsed was Jimmie Don Aycock, Republican of Killeen. He was drafted to run for the Texas House of Representatives by local civic leaders who knew of his exemplary leadership abilities, professional experience, community service, character and integrity.
Texas Parent PAC was his fourth largest contributor in a hotly contested primary election with four candidates, followed by a spirited runoff. In a 2006 campaign letter Texas Parent PAC mailed to voters in Lampasas, Burnet, and Bell Counties, we said, "Jimmie Don Aycock is the only candidate in this race with a demonstrated commitment to public education, including service on the Killeen ISD Board of Trustees and the Central Texas College Board of Trustees. We need lawmakers who understand that quality education and work force training are keys to prosperity."
Fortunately for Texas, he won the primary election runoff with 58% of the vote. Our state is better off because Jimmie Don Aycock was elected, then appointed in 2009 to the Public Education Committee, and in 2013 named Chairman of the Committee. He is well-respected at the Capitol and throughout the state as an advocate for children and high-quality public education.
The business-led organization, Friends of Texas Public Schools, presented its 2013 "Friend of the Year" award to Chairman Jimmie Don Aycock. In announcing the award, they said, "Chairman Aycock was a champion for public school students throughout the 2013 legislative session, leading the Texas House of Representatives against ardent opposition driven by testing companies and their lobbyists to pass one of the most important pieces of legislation for public education in decades."
The story of Chairman Aycock's election with support by Texas Parent PAC is a model to replicate: find top-notch community leaders as candidates, help them win election, then encourage new lawmakers to work in the public interest at the state Capitol. It's the American way!
Texas Parent PAC is now selecting a new group of candidates to support who have the potential to be leaders at the Texas Capitol.
